Deadline Extended: Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition for Juniors & Seniors

The New Jersey League of Municipalities and the Borough have an excellent scholarship opportunity for High School Juniors and Seniors from Bergenfield. The program will offer three $1,000.00 scholarships through the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition.

This statewide scholarship competition centers on the theme “What My Municipal Government Does Best” and seeks to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer members of municipal government.

Bergenfield, Nexcut Shredding & BCUA Partner to Offer Residents Mobile Document Shredding Service.

The Borough of Bergenfield, in partnership with the Bergen County Utilities Authority and Nexcut Shredding will host a confidential document shredding program for Bergenfield residents on Sunday August 4th, 2013, between the hours of 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the rear parking lot of Borough Hall located at 198 N. Washington Ave. The event will be held rain or shine. Borough residents will be provided with opportunity to safely and securely dispose of their confidential and personal documents. This mobile document- shredding service, provided by Nexcut Shredding, and paid for by the BCUA, will not only provide an effective tool against identity theft, it will help Bergenfield “Go Green.” Confidential and personal documents will be handled and recycled in a secure manner, thereby preventing the possibility of identity theft. Borough residents will have the opportunity to observe their documents being shredded on-site. Acceptable documents are limited to confidential and sensitive materials only. It is not necessary to remove paper clips, staples or paperboard binder covers. In an effort to accommodate all those wishing to participate, residents are asked to limit their documents to four (4) bags/boxes weighing no more than 10 lbs. each. All non-confidential papers (hardcover books, magazines, newspapers, photographs and x-rays etc.) should be recycled through the Borough’s regular recycling program and will not be accepted at this event. If you have been storing personal and confidential documents because of the fear of being the victim of identity theft, Sunday August 4, 2013, between 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM is the day to safely and securely dispose of them.       

Free Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Screening this Weekend at the Bergenfield Library

Volunteers from the Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey, Bergen County chapter, will be available at the Bergenfield Library on June 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, June 2, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to do blood pressure and blood sugar screening.  Screening will be done in the lower level Friends Meeting Room.

*No charge and no appointments necessary.*

The Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey is a non-profit professional organization of Filipino nurses established in 1976. A major goal of PNANJ is to organize and actively participate in community health programs relating to disease prevention and health promotion.

runnersBergenfield’s 15th Annual 5K Run/Walk has something for everyone. This event, on Sunday, November 11 at Bergenfield High School, now includes a new race, the Children’s Challenge for youngsters from under four through nine years old. This will be followed by the 1-mile Fun Run for children up to 8th grade and adults; and the 5K Run/Walk. Starting times are Fun Run at 9:15am, and the 5K Run/Walk at 10:30am. Check-in and registration begins at 8:30am.

2012 Summer Bocce League announces awards

Joe Scalora, vice president of the Bergenfield Bocce League, is pleased to announce awards for the Summer Bocce League.

John and Linda Horseman were selected as outstanding wife and husband team. The most improved player award went to Gene Varsalona and the Rookie of the Year honors went to Doug Petro. John Leonessa was recognized for his commitment to expanding the sport of bocce to residents of Bergenfield and Mike Cavilla was given the Dante Abballe good sportsmanship award. At the awards ceremony Joe Civitello was recognized as the best bocce player over the age of 80. Head judge Steven Lastra complimented Ned Kneisler, DPW Director, and the parks department for the excellent condition of the bocce courts.

John Scagliotti, Director of Recreation, has announced the 15th Annual Carlo Cecchino Bocce Tournament will be held at the John A. Aversa Grove on Sunday, October 14. A tree planting ceremony will be held at 10:30 AM in honor of Carlo Cecchino who promoted the sport of bocce during his tenure as a councilman. Application forms to participate in the tournament are available at the Bergenfield Municipal Building, first floor, or by contacting Joe Scalora at 201 385 1355 or Bob Gallione at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
