West Nile Virus 2011

image of mosquito breeding poolThe West Nile Virus Season is officially here in New Jersey, with the first case in Hamilton Township.

West Nile Virus is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. In mild cases, the symptoms are described as flu-like; severe cases, which are rare, include high fever, stiff neck, and encephalitis.

People should be extra vigilant about getting bitten by mosquitoes from now until the early fall (particularly seniors). Also, homeowners must not allow mosquitoes to breed on their property, by removing any standing water. One of the more common complaints to the health department is "unmaintained swimming pools."

Complete information on West Nile Virus can be found on either the CDC website or the NJ State Health Department website.
